Throughout the year our Creative Teaching and Learning Department delivers training events for teachers and dance artists to enable them to develop ways of teaching any subject or topic through movement and embodied learning. We also provide bespoke CPD packages for schools, tailored to fulfil specific requirements. Our aim is to enhance pupils' learning experiences through facilitating the exploration of new and creative strands of pedagogy.  Check this page regularly to keep up to date with the latest opportunities or contact Peter Laycock, Project Officer for Creative Teaching and Learning to discuss your training needs on 020 7121 1036 or

LearnPhysical
Bringing learning to life through movement

A workshop day for primary teachers and dance artists working in education

LearnPhysical is a uniquely engaging, enjoyable and effective way to inspire children and young people, by exploring the curriculum and making meaning through movement. Drawing on theories of embodied learning and using a lively multisensory approach, LearnPhysical lessons appeal to children of all abilities and can address learning objectives in any subject. While centred on movement all LearnPhysical activities take language as their starting point and therefore develop speaking, listening and writing skills.

This practical workshop will guide you through the theory and practice of planning and delivering exciting lessons using the LearnPhysical approach. You will experience first-hand the types of activity that LearnPhysical incorporates, devise your own stimulating lessons and develop and share strategies. Over the last three years The Place, the UK's premier centre for dance, has trained 36 teachers in the LearnPhysical  approach in a wide range of primary schools in London.

"They have approached science in a new way and used their bodies to think about the different scientific processes and vocabulary."
- Year 2 teacher

"It was more helpful doing the dance and learning about symmetry than learning about it in the classroom"
- Year 4 pupil

The Place, in partnership with the Open University, also researched how multisensory learning and digital technologies can work together to enhance curriculum delivery for all pupils. In the final part of the day, we'll share our findings with you through providing an introduction to LearnPhysical interactive and give you ideas of how to incorporate it in your own teaching practice.

Led by Peter Laycock (Project Officer) and Chris Thomson (Director of Creative Teaching and Learning) the day is an opportunity to enhance your own practice alongside fellow educators and artists in a creative, supportive and friendly environment.
