The audition will consist of:

  • Welcome & introduction 
  • Ballet class
  • contemporary class
  • workshop
  • contemporary solo*
  • interview (not all applicants will progress to interview)
  • visa and funding information session

Expect to be at the audition for a minimum of four hours, candidates may or may not be asked to stay for the whole day.

You are requested to wear tight fitting clothes throughout the audition and should bring a leotard/tight fitting t-shirt, footless tights, socks and flat ballet shoes.

*For your contemporary solo presentation you may wish to use music. Either an mp3 player can be used, or a recording can be made on a CD clearly marked with your name, composers name and title of the piece. Your solo should not exceed three minutes. We would also suggest that candidates bring a spare copy of their music in a different format, as not all sound equipment is compatible with all CD recordings.

Janice Garrett is an internationally active choreographer and dance educator. As a young dancer, she danced in New York with Dan Wagoner and Dancers from 1984-89. In 1990 she began a freelance career—choreographing, performing and teaching throughout the US and abroad. She has been commissioned to create dances for companies and performance groups in the US and Europe, was a frequent guest artist with the internationally renowned London Contemporary Dance Theatre and a guest teacher for numerous dance companies including Rambert Dance Company, DV8 Physical Theatre and Matthew Bourne's New Adventures. Honored in 2004 as one of Dance Magazine’s top “25 to Watch,” Janice currently co-directs the San Francisco based company, Garrett + Moulton Productions (formerly Janice Garrett and Dancers) with fellow choreographer Charles Moulton. The company produces an annual performance season, tours nationally and offers ongoing classes and workshops at its home studio at ODC Dance Commons. Sandra Chinn is a ballet teacher for the San Francisco dance companies ODC/SF, Smuin Ballet, Alonzo King Lines Ballet, and guest ballet teacher for touring companies Paul Taylor Dance Company and Matthew Bourne's New Adventures (Nutcracker!, Swan Lake, and Edward Scissorhands). In New York City, she was a company member of Dennis Wayne's Dancers, Finis Jhung's Chamber Ballet USA and Bob Bowyer's American Ballet Comedy. She was featured in the off-Broadway dance show Funny Feet, for which she received a Drama Desk Award nomination as 'Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical'. She is a graduate of the National Academy of Arts (Champaign, Ill.), and she continued her studies at the Joffrey Ballet School, and intensively with independent teacher Maggie Black. Other San Francisco bay area teaching credits include Alonzo King's Lines Dance Center, ODC Dance Commons, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, Berkeley Ballet Theater, Stanford University Summer Arts Intensive.
