Everyone at The Place was greatly saddened to learn of the death of Gill Clarke on Tuesday 15 November 2011.

Few people have single-handedly made such an important and lasting impact on dance. Gill was an exquisitely nuanced performer and dance artist, as well as a mentor, teacher, and passionate advocate. She helped in particular to bring much needed recognition, infrastructure and support to the independent dance sector.

"Countless students, artists, and professional colleagues, not only in the UK but worldwide, have been enriched by Gill’s wisdom and insight, provoked by her curious enquiring mind, and touched by her warmth and generosity of spirit. Gill has left her indelible mark on the lives of so many. We are all so grateful for having known her. The whole dance community will miss her immensely."
Kenneth Tharp, Chief Executive of The Place
