Image of Jan Martens A small guide on how to treat your lifetime companion

Currency is a new programme that presents some of the most exciting and creative new works from Europe and the rest of world in a friendly and interactive format to encourage discussion and engagement with artists that challenge their audience to think in new ways.

In A small guide on how to treat your lifetime companion a couple stuck in an unspecified, four metre square space (perhaps an elevator, a kitchen, a cellar or a caravan) dance a modern mating ritual. Without leaving each other’s sides, Jan Martens and Steefka Zijlstra beautifully illustrate five key moments in a relationship.

In this revealing snippet of two people’s lives, the couple manage to exclude the outside world for 30 minutes before it inevitably forces its way back in again. Jan Martens has created a piece about love in a tender and intimate performance that is both comforting and confrontational.

Der Grüne Stuhl is public in private/Clément Layes’ latest witty duet. In a crossfire between philosophy and dance, the Berlin-based French choreographer uses a seemingly ordinary green chair and two performers to tackle life’s big questions and invalidate fundamental physical laws.
