The Place first opened its doors 40 years ago. 1969 was declared "the year of The Place", as Robin Howard set down a marker to show the world that contemporary dance had "arrived" in Britain, and that his new centre near Euston was its home.
The Place is celebrating this birthday with a year-long programme with the theme of "what dance can do".
It was what dance could do - the potential of dance to, as Howard saw it, "break down social, political, linguistic and other barriers" that inspired Howard to devote his life and fortune to The Place. A belief in the power of dance to transform and enrich lives is a common thread between The Place's founding principles and its work today.
A new website - whatdancecando.com - has been created for people to share their ideas, reflections and reminiscences about dance from the past 40 years: how it has touched their lives, what dance might do in the future.
You can post pictures and videos, join or suggest discussions. It's part an attempt to crowd-source a social history, part meeting place for a community with shared interest in dance, part an experiment to see what that community want this site to become.
