Gypsy Mixture (2004)

Image taken from Richard Alston's work 'Gypsy Mixture'

The guttural and fervent cries of Balkan singers form the basis of Alston’s new work. Re-mixed by a range of DJs from all over the world, gypsy influences are given a sharp twist, a grittier edge. Gypsy Mixture is about humanity fighting to keep its spirit against harsh and uncertain surroundings.

"A glorious life-enhancing ruckus: a caper across continents and dance styles that kicked up its heels to a touch of klezmer or twitched its hips to a Romanian samba. Gorgeous, exuberantly danced fun"

The Herald

Charge (2004)

The vibrant energy of Steve Reich’s Electric Guitar Phase powers a razor-sharp company piece, originally commissioned for The Place Prize 2004. Charge is choreographed by company dancer Martin Lawrance.

"A total blast... it genuinely generates a sense of racing currents, of conductivity... edgy, fast, brilliantly clever"

The Herald

Overdrive (2003)

Terry Riley’s mesmerising Keyboard Studies create ever more complicated layers of urgent rhythm, pushing the dancers to their limits and setting the whole stage in frenetic motion.

"Alston at his finest, driving the 11 dancers through a series of beautifully lit duets, trios and ensemble moments. A genuine pleasure to watch"
The Scotsman

 Grey Allegro (2003)

Image taken from Richard Alston's work 'Grey Allegro'
Grey Allegro is driven by the feisty vigour of Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonatas for keyboard. Choreographed by company dancer Martin Lawrance, Grey Allegro is taut and elegant matching musical lyricism with choreographic precision.

"Keeps you on the edge of your seat…I was held so rapt that I kept on forgetting to breathe"
