Resolution! at The Place is the annual platform for the newest in contemporary choreography. By the end of the forthcoming 2010 season it will have presented over 1600 dance companies since its inception in 1990.
Almost all of today’s top UK-based contemporary choreographers presented their earliest work in Resolution!, including Wayne McGregor, Mark Baldwin and Rafael Bonachela. Resolution! 2010 features 102 companies in 34 performances over 7 weeks, from Wednesday 6 January to Saturday 20 February.
Resolution! consistently produces a season that is intriguing in its sheer range and diversity. The quantity and variety of artists taking part mean that the Resolution! programme uncovers work of an exciting and unpredictable nature. But it is likely that within this mix is the country’s most promising new talent, as it was when Javier de Frutos, Henri Oguike, Jasmin Vardimon, Katie Prince and Hofesh Shechter, to choose just a small number of examples, presented early works in the season.
Resolution! provides emerging companies with the opportunity to present their work in a professional theatre, and also to participate in a range of workshops. The workshops offer insights into all aspects of professional choreographic practice – from lighting design to marketing and publicity - helping to facilitate the often difficult transition from vocational dance training to the professional performance world. The Place also supports some of these choreographers by providing free rehearsal space for the preparation of the new work.
The programme is split into three strands:
- Six of the companies performing in Resolution! are from European countries outside of the UK and are presented as part of the Aerowaves programme. Selected by a panel of 35 European dance experts from over 400 video submissions, this year’s Aerowaves (A) companies are from Belgium, Italy, Spain and Romania.
- 62 companies are making their choreographic debuts in the season’s First Footing (F) strand, having never featured previously in the programme
- 34 Evolution (E) companies have performed in Resolution! previously and return to the platform this year with a new piece.
The final component is Resolution! Review. The Place commissions six leading dance critics to review the platform, then selects six aspiring writers from numerous applications to be mentored by these professional writers. Reviews for all 102 works in the season will be available on The Place’s website within 24 hours of the performance; each night in the season will be re viewed by a professional critic and by their mentee.
