Robin Howard

Robin Howard, in whose honour the Robin Howard Dance Theatre is named, was the founder of The Place. For nearly forty years he devoted his life and fortune to developing and promoting excellence in British contemporary dance.

Since his death in 1989, dance and dancers in this country have continued to be encouraged to take risks through the charity of the Robin Howard Foundation. After ten years of giving, the Foundation wound itself up with a final one-off payment to The Place which completed the campaign to raise match funds for our lottery-funded redevelopment.

Those who knew Robin Howard still speak of the awe and affection he inspired, and everyone who comes to work here still shares in his vision. The Place’s theatre was renamed the Robin Howard Dance Theatre in 2001 in honour and recognition of our founder. His legacy is both the magnificent buildings of The Place, and the passion for dance, the arts and our shared humanity that continues to spread beyond its walls and into our culture.
