The Place is 40 years old this year, and its impact and influence is felt throughout the dance world and beyond.
It is hard to think of a contemporary choreographer or dancer that has not at some point in their career either trained or worked at The Place: they include Richard Alston, Matthew Bourne, Siobhan Davies, Shobana Jeyasingh, Russell Maliphant, Hofesh Shechter and countless others.
Alongside the work of all these artists, The Place has also stood as a beacon for artistic adventurousness, for finding challenging and engaging new possibilities for dance, for exploring what dance can do.
A series of special events this May celebrate the history of The Place, highlight the extraordinary range of work that takes place there today, and look to the future and the continuing evolution of dance.
On Sat 15 and Sun 16 May, Something Happening is a multi-stage festival. In the theatre, in studios and specially-configured spaces, in the windows and on the walls, in corridors and in cupboards, they’ll be opportunities to share in the vibrant, diverse, experimental and exciting dance that is created at The Place.
From Thu 20 - Sat 22 May, This Is The Place is a specially commissioned new work telling the story of The Place: a collection of memories, anecdotes, dancers and performances that have together shaped The Place, as well as the stories of many for whom The Place has played an important role in their life and work, directed by Aletta Collins.
Robert Cohan, the founding artistic director of The Place, appears in conversation on Sat 22 May with two former students: Richard Alston, his successor as Artistic Director, and Kenneth Tharp, Chief Executive of The Place.
