Deep End May 07

The latest of our series of open debates into issues affecting contemporary dance training and practice took place in May.
"I have three rules for teaching effectively. Number one: only
teach what you know. Number two: teach everything you know
- don't hold anything back. Number three: teach with love."

Robert Cohan, Founding Artistic Director of The Place

At our Deep End panel held in November 2006, Robert Cohan advised that teachers should teach only what they understand at a deep level. Encouraging dance students to listen to their bodies and assuming responsibility for their own learning in a supportive context, is a shared perspective for good teaching practice, whatever ‘technique’ is used.

At the May 2007 Deep End we started from the position of embracing the somatic nature of movement and its application to all areas of dance technique. Kirsty Alexander, Assistant Director of London Contemporary Dance School, goes on to ask: "How are teachers and students to develop a fully engaged relationship with the art form they study and how are they to ‘be’ in the broader world of which they are a part?"

Notes from Kirsty's presentation can be downloaded using the link on the right. DVD copies are available to view in the School library.

Deep End is a regular series of discussion events at The Place. While created primarily for Place students and staff, they are open events which industry colleagues and other interested parties are welcome to attend.
