Louise Katerega was one of the twenty artists commissioned to make works for The Place Prize 2006, sponsored by Bloomberg.
Writing in the December 2006 edition of JUICE, she charts her journey from beginning her research, through deciding to enter and being commissioned, to the competition itself, and reflects on what her involvement in The Place Prize has meant for her and her career.
"You can take opportunities like The Place Prize at face value. Think of it as just a few weeks in September, a trophy and a title that is, in fact, as important for all of us, as much it is as the winner, in terms of the exposure it gets our artform.
Or you can see The Place Prize as an experience and a journey. Pack properly, choose your companions well, plan for all eventualities. Your way is strewn with treasures. Only one person can hold The Place Prize, but if you know how and where to look then the rewards are many, varied and up for grabs by anyone… " Louise Katerega
