A full transcript (13,000 words) of the Deep End symposium Contemporary Heritage: a fusion of horizons held at The Place in November 2006.
In a conversation chaired by Kenneth Tharp, Robert Cohan, Christopher Bannerman and Ross McKim discuss the Cohan's legacy to British contemporary dance.
The major questions concerned the connections between the methods used by Cohan and today’s somatic approach (that names is from the Greek ‘soma’ meaning bodyand is used it to define a way of teaching dance that encourages students to listen to their individual bodies). We asked: ‘what can we recapture from the traditional signature techniques to help us enhance this somatic approach and to move forward in our search for excellence in dance training and performance’?
Participants shared valuable artistic and pedagogic information but the discussions were sprinkled throughout with amusing anecdotes from Cohan about working with Martha Graham and from Chris Bannerman, Ross McKim and Kenneth Tharp about working with Cohan.
