Digging in, getting tougher

AnnieVickySarah Take Space is a project, supported by Candoco Dance Company and The Place. Events include workshops, pro classes and R&D at The Place, where each of us will make investigations into a new work this spring.

We’ve just finished the second week of research for my portion of AnnieVickySarah Take Space.

The first week we started off by trying loads and loads of different performance tasks and material, piling a lot of options in and trying things in different combinations.  I had a lot of ideas I wanted to test out, and we managed to try them all, and at the end of the week we were all quite exhausted and oversaturated.

This second week we began weeding things out and refining the parts that work the best and are most interesting. Fueled by some really useful feedback from Lea Anderson, my mentor for this project, and our dramaturg Chris Higgins, we’ve made some discoveries this week that really pushed the work along.

This week we were also working next door to Sarah’s team at The Place, and since Vicky is dancing in my work, it’s been great to have all of us together, and drop in to see what the others have been up to.

My research involves digging into improvisational structures, and investigating how performers can make something fantastic in the moment by deeply embodying the movement while at the same time maintaining a choreographic eye on the entire situation as it unfolds.

Developing this simultaneous inner and outer view takes a lot of practice. This week we discovered that even as the rules of the game become clearer, it takes just as much attention and commitment from the performers each time.  It’s hard work, and by its nature doesn’t get easier!  That’s why I’m so happy to be working with a dream team of three dancer collaborators who enjoy this challenge as much as I do.

Come and see the fabulous Lou, Sophie and Vicky in action on the 13th of May!
