My week has been absolutely wonderful! The atmosphere at The Place is incredibly positive and it is clear that everyone is really passionate about their roles. It was particularly interesting to learn about all the positions that I hadn’t come across before, for example Theatre and Artist Development who help launch projects to share and develop artists’ work.
One of the most exciting things about being at The Place is being around extremely inspiring people. For example I was thrilled to have the opportunity to talk to Richard Alston, he told me about his journey to where he is now and how he creates his work. It was also invaluable to hear his advice for people like myself in pre-vocational training who are hoping to go into a career in contemporary dance.
Another thing that I particularly enjoyed was observing the students at London Contemporary Dance School in class. Not only was it great to see their impressive technique but it was very interesting to see how they collaborated with the teachers and worked pro-actively to develop and improve individually. As well as their classes we were lucky enough to see some of the Ideas In Action performances which are choreographed and performed by the students themselves. There were some really unique pieces which inspired me to try and develop my own choreographic skills in an original way.
Another performance I watched was that of EDge, the MA company at LCDS, who were showing four pieces by external choreographers. They were absolutely amazing and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to see them at The Place.
I have learnt so much from my work experience, particularly about the many different people who work together to make The Place the creative hub which it is. I will remember this week forever and I can’t recommend the experience enough.
