Louise Clohesy brought her 9 month old daughter Edie to the special Parent & Baby Matinee Performance of Clod Ensemble's Placebo on Thu 8 Nov 2018. Find out about her experience...
Attending the theatre with a noisy babe in arms is enough to put the fear of god in anyone! But on Thursday 8 November I rocked up at The Place in Kings Cross for their third parent and baby matinee. Much like baby cinema, this was not a kids show but one for the grown ups who struggle to get out in the evening. It was to be my first cultural experience in over 9 months and boy was I ready to do something for me!
As I entered the double doors I was greeted by a friendly Box Office assistant: “Would you prefer an aisle seat in case you need to get up and move around?”. Why didn’t I even think to ask that? But yes! That would be really helpful, thank you! Ticket purchased, I walked up to the theatre bar and smiled at the other parents whose children were happily playing in the soft play area. My daughter’s face lit up as she discovered shiny jugging balls to play with (and enthusiastically try to feed to the other children). The atmosphere lightened even further as Lia, the producer of the event, briefed us on the relaxed nature of the performance and the facilities available. Even the baby changing mats faced the stage so we didn’t need to miss a step! Wow, they’ve really thought of everything!
With comfortable seats and plenty of space for the mountain of stuff you accumulate when travelling with a baby, we settled in for the show. It was a perfect blend of dynamic movement, a vibrant musical score and sequins! We loved the sequins! Certainly enough to capture Edie’s attention as she bounced vigorously on my lap, waving frantically at all the dancers. Even shouts of “dada dada” at the top of her tiny lungs wasn’t enough to put them off as they glided across the stage.
Performance over, we headed back outside to find the shiny juggling balls and were greeted by some of the performers (Eek...I hope they like eating juggling balls!) who came to meet their youngest fans.
A lovely touch to end a lovely day. I just only wish I knew the date of the next one so I could pop it in my diary!
