Countertechnique with Eugenia Demeglio

We spoke to Countertechnique teacher Eugenia Demeglio

What is your dancing background?

I started training in RAD ballet when I was eight years old, by pure coincidence. As I was a very vivacious child, my parents were trying to tire me out in order to avoid my proposals of evening volleyball matches in the corridor leading to the bedroom. I was brought to the first class reluctantly, as I did not like 'princesses and pink', but then the magic happened. From then on I went to ballet twice a week and the remaining afternoons I would play Tsaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite from Disney’s Fantasia VHS on loop for three hours and dance wildly to it. I ruined the VHS.

Fast forward to more than 15 years later and here I am: still that same vivacious child who managed to channel her energy into contemporary dance. Throughout those years I’ve had the honour to train in The Netherlands at the Rotterdam Dance Academy, to dance in a number of productions in Belgium, The Netherlands and Italy, and to devise and present my works in The Netherlands, Italy, Greece, UK, Austria and FYROM.

What can we expect from your class?

A very high energy 90 minutes, nurturing the body as well as the mind, all sprinkled with a very light and humorous mood.

What do you like most about teaching?

I absolutely adore witnessing the “a-ha!” moment in the eyes of a student when they can embody a suggestion.

Who was your most influential teacher?

Anouk van Dijk, founder and developer of Countertechnique. I met her as a student while I was attending the Rotterdam Dance Academy. What struck me the most was how her knowledge of anatomy and movement pervaded her class and her directions, and still she made the class feel light and fun.

What has been your biggest challenge as a dancer?

Having to deal with a back injury that did not allow me to move for three months.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

Emmeline Pankhurst, Maria Montessori, Stanley Kubrik, Eddie Izzard and John Cage.

Eugenia will teach Countertechnique Level 1/2 and Level 2/3 on our Summer Dance Courses. We run regular classes for all ages and abilities plus special courses and workshops, find out more and get dancing with us.
