Meet The Dancer: Erin Pollitt

We spoke to EDGE dancer Erin Pollitt.

Erin first trained in rhythmic gymnastics, reaching national level at the age of 12 before discovering her true love of dance during her training at The Lowry Centre for Advanced Training Scheme in Manchester.

You are touring the UK and internationally with 19 dates in 6 countries, what are you most looking forward to about this?

I’m very much looking forward to visiting so many different places and getting the chance to show our work in such a variety of settings, plus I love traveling and seeing new things. I’m very excited to visit some countries I’ve never been to but heard so much about (especially ‘The Sound of Music’ tour in Austria!)

How do the different cultures in the company (Costa Rica, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, USA and the UK) come together? In which ways do you inspire each other?

I find the sense of humour and the way we act socially fascinating! Sometimes I just sit and watch how everyone behaves and it's so interesting how we are all so different but joined by our passion for moving. I think these differences and nuances have inspired not only the rest of the company, but picked up by the choreographers and showcased in the pieces.

You are working with four contrasting choreographers, what are the different ways of working and how do you adapt to each?

I have found this one of the hardest parts of the process so far. Each choreographer is so different, not only in their processes and how they work, but also how they move and how they envisage movement. The shift between each one has been challenging For example, the first day with Athina, I felt like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards, and gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson (and probably looked like it too!). Whereas the first day with Philippe, we lay down for 40 minutes or so and spoke at length about our inner sensations and tiny impulses in our body. Because of the contrasts I have learnt something very specific from each choreographer and found each of their presence valuable. They were generous with their knowledge.

What can audiences expect from the mixed bill?

If anything they can expect to be entertained! No two pieces are remotely similar, each one sitting by itself in its own right, and each one filled and bursting at the seams with energy, theatrics, creativity and most of all talent. My fellow colleagues continue to blow me away on a daily basis and I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve been working on.

What do you hope to learn and achieve throughout the tour?

I hope to learn a lot of things but mostly how I deal with performing the same show multiple times, and about how we as a company develop the work over 20+ performances. How it changes, how we adapt to new spaces and challenges, and how we deal with the inevitable highs and lows of touring life.

What has the process taught you about yourself so far?

This is a tough one. I could write a whole essay - but I guess in short it has taught me to not be so hard on myself and just go with the flow a little bit more.

You will finish your tour with a residency in Portugal, teaching and developing new works with 150 young people aged 3 - 25 years, from the region. In which ways do you hope do develop from this collaborative experience?

I think it will be a great experience to work with so many young people. It is such a privilege to work with younger people as they have zero inhibitions and just throw everything they have to the work, and that is so refreshing. We can certainly learn from the way children work.

One of your performances in Portugal is dedicated to works created by yourselves, how does this add to your experience?

Its fantastic that we get to create our own works and to showcase them at such a unique platform. It's something to look forwards to as the tour comes to an end.

How do you feel being a member of EDGE has helped to prepare you for professional life?

I have found this year such a valuable experience. It's been immensely helpful in helping me gain confidence in myself an as independent dance artist, but also to gain an insight into how a professional company works and what to expect. I anticipate that the extensive tour will help me with gaining the necessary performance experience needed to succeed in this line of work, and at the end of the day I have loved every minute of EDGE so far. It has made me even more excited to get out into the professional world and get dancing!
