We are constantly getting inspired by young people who want to be part of the dance world and that is why we open our doors to young dreamers who want to pursue a career in the arts. Rebecca and Susan experienced a work placement for a week and here they tell us what it’s like to be part of The Place’s family.
As a CAT student at DanceEast, Ipswich, pursuing a career in dance has always been of interest to me. So, upon having my application for work experience at The Place confirmed, I was excited to get a feel of the general ethos of the building, meet some new people and get a brief insight into the many departments here.
Kimberely Eade’s organisation of a fantastic timetable (thanks for all the help!) gave me the opportunity to experience a tiny fraction of work life here. To begin with, observing both LCDS classes as well as EDGE in Capture was incredibly inspiring since both the teachers and students had such close-knit relationships, allowing the learning environment to be one of support, growth and development. Moreover, discussions with Assistant Producer Reece, Nina from Theatre and Artist Development, Faylisha from Development, Rebecca from EDGE, Katie from the Richard Alston Dance Company and the teams from Classes and Courses and Communications gave me a completely new perspective on the choreographic, organisational and performance sides of the dance industry. Marco was incredibly informed during the tech run and tour of the theatre and was so helpful in answering any questions I had. Furthermore, Maria’s willingness (Creative Learning Department) to get me a ticket to watch an open EDGE class, as well as Irad’s kindness (CAT Office) in allowing me to participate in an inspiring CAT ballet class are just additional reminders of how lovely everyone at The Place is!
Gaining a greater awareness of all the “backstage” people it takes to support choreographers and professional dancers - whose work continues to create opportunities for the next generation of want-to-be dancers - has made me come to appreciate the complexities and tireless work of every individual at The Place even more. My experience here has been brilliant and has only heightened my desire to become a part of the dance community. I can’t thank all the staff enough for their help and support throughout the week and therefore, to anyone considering Work Experience at The Place, I would definitely recommend it!
Thanks again everyone!
I was very fortunate to have been offered to work with The Place for a week. I was able to learn how each department operates, especially when preparing for a show. I particularly enjoyed watching the London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS) shows on Day 4 of my placement, as I was able to see the level of talent, technique and performance that it sets for aspiring dancers. Each day was different and taught me something new about each department.
What’s unique about The Place is their drive to constantly outreach communities and schools, to encourage young people as well as adults to take up dance. The Place has taught me more about the dance industry than I ever learned during my training in dance. Moreover, the staff’s willingness to support young people and push past misconceptions of the dance industry has given me much more confidence to pursue my passion for dance. There is a sense of community within The Place that I admire and that is reflective in their ethos.
I am deeply thankful for the staff members from each department, especially the HR department, for leaving me with a memorable experience and for teaching me a lot about myself and what type of profession I would like to pursue within the dance industry. The Place is definitely a supportive community that every aspiring dancer should have the opportunity to be a part of.
