Chair of the Board of Governors

The Place has been one of the world's leading centres for contemporary dance, particularly new choreography, ever since it established its home near King's Cross, London in 1969. As we move towards our 50th anniversary, we are looking to draw inspiration from the pioneering spirit of the founders and appoint a new Chair.

The Place is led by our Chief Executive, Clare Connor, who joined the organisation in August 2017. On 1 January 2018 she also became the Interim Principal of London Contemporary Dance School. Clare is responsible for the overall artistic, academic and business leadership of the organisation.

The Board of Governors are responsible for setting the overall strategy of The Place and ensuring there is effective governance. In order to deliver our strategy for 2018/23, over the next three years the Chair will need to develop an excellent working relationship with the Chief Executive and engage regularly with the life of The Place.

The responsibilities of the Chair include:

  • Chairing the Board of Governors, setting the agenda and ensuring effective governance
  • Leading the organisation in partnership with the Chief Executive
  • Monitoring performance and delivery of the agreed strategy
  • Developing high quality and mutually respected relationships across the Board, Leadership Team and key external individuals
  • Advocating to government, the arts, education, funders and individuals of influence
  • Representing The Place at key public events and, where agreed, in the media and press
  • Helping to enhance financial stability and creating an environment to generate resources to finance growth
  • Advising the Board on matters of advocacy, policy and strategy
  • Ensuring timely and  effective succession planning of all key roles
  • Supporting the work of the Commercial Hires and Development functions, through insights and introductions.

The time commitment for the Chair is likely to be 4 or 5 days a month. The position is not remunerated but reasonable travel expenses will be paid.

We are particularly interested to hear from BAME candidates as we strive to achieve the same diversity among our Board members that we see among our students, staff, artists and audiences.
