Frequently Asked Questions - Youth

We offer creative dance classes for participants aged 3-18 years old. These classes take place primarily on Saturday mornings, with a couple of classes taking place during the week, all of which run on a termly basis.

In addition to this, we also offer workshops and holiday projects throughout the year and we host our two youth companies, Shift and Shuffle. To view our current programme click here.

You can book a class online here, in person in our office, or over the phone by calling reception on 020 7121 1029. All participants who are booked to participate in one of our classes must then submit a completed Participant Information Form. Please note if you do not complete the form your young dancer will not be able to take part.

To complete your Participant Information form please follow the link included in your welcome email. If you experience any technical issues with the online enrolment form please email us for a downloadable version or pick up a paper copy from our office.

Your young dancer’s safety is paramount to us and this form allows us to ensure we have any relevant medical information and contact details to best assist your young dancer. It is also vital for safeguarding purposes as it outlines if your young person is allowed to leave the building on their own.

If you are booking online, payment will be taken at time of booking. However, if you are paying in an alternative format e.g. with an ITF contribution, all fees must be paid in full by the second Saturday of the term. Payments by card can be made over the phone by calling us or the reception on 020 7121 1029. Alternatively, payments can be made in the Classes & Courses office where we accept card, or at Reception where you can pay in cash. If you are unable to meet the deadline please ensure you arrange a payment plan with us by phone, email or in our office. All payment plans must be agreed by the first Saturday of the term.

We are unable to offer refunds unless it is for medical reasons and a doctor’s note can be provided to the office team. We may be able to offer credit notes in certain situations as outlined in our T&C’s.

Please note: We do not offer retrospective refunds. All refunds will only be given from the date of notice. Refund requests must be submitting in writing via email.

In this instance, please come and speak to the Children and Youth Dance team as we would love to discuss with you any problems your young person is having and if we can do anything to make their experience in our classes more enjoyable.

If your young person still feels that the programme is not for them, we can issue a credit note providing we are notified by the second week of the term. This credit note can be used for any other class, course or performance at The Place. Credit notes are subject to a £30.00 non-refundable deposit.**

** All participants’ bookings include a £30 non-refundable deposit as this financially covers two classes from the overall fee.

Please click here to take a look at our Terms and Conditions for more information on refunds.

Financial support can be given through the Iris Tomlinson Fund. This can be applied for through a means-tested application form. For more information, please see our bursaries webpage.

Payment plans can be agreed in advance with the Children and Youth Dance Team, to do this please email us by the first Saturday of term.

Classes have creativity at the heart: your young dancer can expect to be led through a warm-up, some technical exercises, in varying dance forms dependent on the teacher, followed by creative tasks on their own and in groups before finishing with a cool down. Classes are designed to allow young people to deepen their understanding of their bodies: how to move safely and creatively with a range of movement vocabulary whilst allowing space for discovery, exploration, and most importantly: fun! Young dancers will have the chance to create, play, discover new skills and challenge themselves in a warm and vibrant environment with other young people.

Our classes are led by a teaching artist, supported by a teaching assistant, and often have a live musician.

Please wear clothes that are comfortable to move in – no dresses or skirts please, but shorts, leggings, t-shirts, and jogging bottoms are all fine. Please ensure jewellery is removed and long hair is tied back. Most of our classes take place in bare feet, unless otherwise stated.

Male and female changing rooms are available; entrance codes will be available from reception or the registration desk. There are also gender-neutral toilets available for you to change in.

In the interest of safety, please do not bring any valuables with you or leave anything in the changing rooms. Your belongings can be brought into the studio and left neatly at the edge of the room.

Participants should bring a refillable water bottle which you can refill from the onsite water fountains.

Please be aware that food and drinks (other than water) are not allowed in our studios. Please do not consume nuts on site before or after classes, as some participants across various programmes have severe allergies.

Please refer to our booking pages for up-to-date term dates.

All important information and dates will be emailed to you, please keep an eye on your inbox and keep us updated if you change your email address, or any other contact details.

We will also post all relevant information on the Children and Youth Dance notice board (level 2 at The Place, by the Classes and Courses office).

It is important that all young people arrive on time for their class and they are collected promptly. If a young dancer is more than 15 minutes late it is at the teacher’s discretion as to whether they can join the class for health and safety reasons as they will have missed the warm- up. If you are running late, please contact Reception on 020 7121 1029 so they can inform a relevant member of staff.

If your dancer is in secondary school (Year 7 or above), unless stated in their participant information form, they will not be signed out of the building to an adult and we cannot accept responsibility for these students once their sessions have finished.

If your dancer is at primary school (Reception to Year 6) we will sign participants out to allocated parents/carers at the end of each session unless we have prior confirmation in their participant information form or their named adult has notified the CYD team.

In the event that you are not going to be on time to collect your young dancer the office should be notified at the earliest opportunity and your young person will be brought to the office until you arrive. Please contact reception on 020 7121 1029 to let us know.

As part of the participant information form distributed in your welcome email, you are able to state whether images and footage of your young person can be used for promoting the work of The Place.

Filming and photography are not permitted in our studios by anyone (including teachers, other participants or parents/carers) unless it has been organised by the Children and Youth Dance team.

If your young dancer will be late or is unable to attend any sessions please email the team in advance. We ask that your dancer does not miss anymore than 3 sessions per term where possible. Due to the volume of participants in our classes we are unable to follow up on every unexplained absence, however if there are two unexplained absences in a row a member of the team will be in touch.

Our building has 2 entrances. It is best to arrive at the Flaxman Terrace entrance: 16 Flaxman Terrace, London, WC1H 9AT. More information.

The Place is a fully accessible building and we endeavour to make our classes accessible to everyone. If you or your young person has any access needs or other requirements please contact us.

As well as our youth programme, we also offer an Adult programme.

We have a fantastic theatre in our building which we would recommend you check out as it offers performances for all ages!

We are also home to the Centre for Advanced Training and London Contemporary Dance School.
