Robert Cohan, Founding Artistic Director of The Place, was a prolific choreographer, an utterly brilliant teacher and also a shrewd strategist. Single-handedly he changed the face of contemporary dance in this country. Well, perhaps not quite single-handedly, for it was Robin Howard, Founder of the Contemporary Dance Trust, who had the vision to invite Cohan to lead his as yet only dreamt-of new organisation comprising a Company, a School and a building which was to become known as The Place - Cohan bravely took up this invitation and contemporary dance in Britain was born.

Hosted by Akosua Boakye BEM in front of the empty auditorium of the Courtyard Theatre in Hereford, with winners joining in by video, the online ceremony still managed to create a glamorous atmosphere as the dance community honoured those that worked so hard to keep the heart of dance beating this year.

On Monday 21 September, we were made aware of social media posts relating to a historical allegation of sexual grooming of a London Contemporary Dance School Alumnus by a teacher.
Our policies and practices strictly prohibit staff to student relationships. We take all allegations of abuse of any kind with the utmost seriousness and are unwavering in our commitment to create an environment which keeps all students, alumni, staff, audiences, and participants safe.
