  • Congratulations Sir Robert Cohan

    Robert Cohan CBE, the Founding Artistic Director of The Place, was awarded a knighthood for Services to Choreography & Dance in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

    This award is a wonderful acknowledgment of Sir Robert's prolific contribution to dance as a choreographer, an utterly brilliant teacher and a shrewd strategist. Together with founder and visionary Robin Howard, Sir Robert led the Contemporary Dance Trust's artistic ambition and consequently redrew the map for British Dance.

    We are proud to confirm that Richard Alston has been awarded a knighthood by Her Majesty the Queen for Services to Dance as announced in the 2019 New Year’s Honours List. The award is a wonderful acknowledgement of the remarkable contribution to the art form Richard has made over five decades as one of the most inspiring and influential choreographers in contemporary dance.

Richard Alston has been creating dance for over 50 years and his company has been resident at The Place for the past 24 years. In that time, Alston has played a major role in the world of contemporary dance, developing a unique and distinct dance language and shaping the art form in this country.

    Richard Alston CBE is to step aside in November as Artistic Director of leading contemporary dance organisation The Place. Alston, who has held the position since 1994 will be seventy in late October and wishes to concentrate his energy on leading Richard Alston Dance Company towards its 25th anniversary in 2020.

  • The Place is blazing the trail for talented graduates in the creative industries

    Recent graduate Reece McMahon is starting work at The Place after landing a place on a prestigious nationwide programme promoting new talent in the arts.

    Reece is one of just 40 recent graduates from around the country picked to receive a Weston Jerwood Creative Bursary. Reece will spend 12 months working as Assistant Producer at The Place as a paid placement in line with Living Wage Foundation guidelines.
