Class Description:
Created for beginners, this course is an introduction to the south Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. This spring term, sessions will be devised by Shivaangee Agrawal and delivered by a team of Bharatanatyam artists, giving participants the opportunity to discover the rich multiplicity of UK-based artistic practices within this dance form. Through a series of in-person classes and remote lecture-demonstration sessions, participants will delve into the fundamentals of movement technique, storytelling and gestural traditions, the use of music and rhythm, the history of bharatanatyam and the socio-political context of current practice in the UK. 

Written and digital course materials are also provided, and a schedule of artists and session themes will be provided here shortly. 

Level Information: 

  • No prior experience in Bharatanatyam is required for this class. 
  • ​Classes will honour the interdisciplinary nature of Bharatanatyam, and use different modes of learning 
  • The classes will be delivered in an inclusive way and The Place welcomes queries around access needs 
  • The term will run for 11 sessions (6 sessions in-person on Mondays and 5 sessions online on Saturdays) 
  • You can either enroll for the 11 sessions or drop in separately

To take part in online classes, you will need:   

  • A device with access to the internet and audio   
  • A clear space to move your body in safely  
  • Some comfy clothes

  • You will receive an email at least  1 hour before  the class starts from the Classes team, with details of how to access the online class including the Zoom link. If you do not receive an email at least 1 hour before the class, please contact
