Professionals & Artist Development

Upon graduating from the London Contemporary Dance School in 2010, James Cousins was awarded the Robert Cohan Award for most promising dance artist.

Since joining the cast of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake for an international tour (year-year), James has worked extensively as a freelance dancer alongside his choreographic work. As well as choreographing for his own company, he has made works for EDge, Verve, Scottish Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Opera Graz and National Ballet of Chile.

Described by Matthew Bourne as "one of the UK’s most promising choreographic talents", James was the winner of the inaugural New Adventures Choreographer Award.

His duet There We Have Been was presented in Spring Loaded at The Place and as part of the British Council Edinburgh Showcase 2013, and continues to tour internationally.

His upcoming production Without Stars is set to premiere in 2014. He had been named by Time Out magazine as one of the future faces of dance.

There We Have Been presents a daringly intimate glimpse into a secluded world of fragile dependency. This touching and emotionally charged duet sees the two performers’ intensely folding, wrapping and balancing, with the female character never once touching the floor.
