Shuffle dance company

What is Shuffle Youth Company?

Shuffle is the junior dance company at The Place for young dancers 9-14 years.

The company meet every Saturday during term-time from 1-2.45pm.

Shuffle members work both independently and as a group to learn, create and perform dance, in an inviting, supportive and friendly environment.

Shuffle encourages young dancers to think about dance composition and how to create original dances, as well as improve their technical ability, develop their creative expression and performance skills through a weekly company class and performance opportunities throughout the year.

The Shuffle experience has been created to inspire creativity and confidence in young dancers and to nurture their creative growth throughout the year.

The rehearsal director for Shuffle is Ihsaan De Banya

Ihsaan was born in London, and began his training with The Place’s Centre for Advance Training (CAT) and Shift. During his time with both he danced works by Bawren Tavaziva, Tom Dale, Jose Agudo and Maresa Von Stockert. In 2010 he continued training at London Contemporary Dance School. Graduating in 2013 dancing Theo Clinkard’s Murrisant (Ripening). Ihsaan joined Richard Alston Dance Company in 2013 as an apprentice becoming a full member in 2014. In 2015 following the success of a 2013 Resolution creation, Ihsaan was commissioned by The Place to choreograph for the Company’s Alston At Home season. He created Rasengan, a danced for three exploring an abstract energy within us all.

Who can join Shuffle?

Anyone aged 9-14 years old can apply to join Shuffle. Some dance experience is desirable but not essential. We are looking for interesting young dancers who show creative potential and who are willing to work as part of a team.

What can I expect?

Shuffle members need to be ready to commit. Shuffle is for the whole academic year. Dancers meet every Saturday during term-time from 13:00-14:45 with Temi.

Dancers will work closely with their rehearsal director Temi to create original new works, which they will then perform at theatres and platforms throughout the year. Over the next two terms alongside performance opportunities, company dancers can explore their own choreographic style and develop their technical skills with projects, tasks and exploration sessions.

How can I join?

Entry to the company is through a Selection Taster Session, which will be held next September 2018.

Further information on the selection taster and how to book will be available from July 2018.

What will the selection taster be like?

The Selection Taster will represent a typical Shuffle class and will involve a warm up, like a normal contemporary dance class followed by creative tasks. There will be a short Question and Answer Session at the end of the class. There will be up to 30 participants in each session, the session will be led by the rehearsal director with a small panel.

Note that you do not need to prepare anything for the session but you must let us know of any special requirements so we can support you.

Please also be aware we will only hold one Selection Taster day so if you are unable to make that we cannot arrange another session or accept footage of you dancing. We endeavour to make sure that the Selection Taster is a fun, playful and positive experience for everyone.

We try to make the process as enjoyable as possible, however we like to be honest from the start, and places in the company are very limited so we ask that parents’ manage their participant’s expectations accordingly. We recommend that the Selection Taster is treated as a free workshop and it’s as much for the participants to see if Shuffle is right for them.

Is there a fee?

The current annual fee for the 2017-18 Shuffle year is £325.00

The fee can be paid in instalments throughout the year, it just needs to be agreed with our classes and courses team.
