Meet the LiveVibe artists #2: Myself UK Dance Company and Yukiko Masui

Next in our series of Live Vibe blog posts we introduce Myself UK Dance Company and Yukiko Masui.

Myself UK Dance Company

Founded in 2008 by creative artist, Kloé Dean, Myself UK Dance is an all-female Hip Hop dance company based in London, UK. Determined to challenge the male-dominated Hip Hop scene, Kloé has brought together a group of strong female dancers. An idea which began with just a few young women in a room has since grown to become an empowering company of performers.

Training, rehearsing and performing regularly, the company boasts an array of credits and diverse dance experience with a back-catalogue that includes: London's International Hip Hop Dance Festival 'Breakin Convention' at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Hip Hop International Championships in Las Vegas, NIKE and Sky One TV’s Got to Dance.

Myself UK Dance Company is an all-female collective of strong Hip-Hop dancers, formed to not only inspire females but also the wider society. They promote empowerment, ambition, individuality and self-worth through the medium of Hip-Hop dance and the slogan' I Love Myself '.

Yukiko Masui

Yukiko is a Tokyo-born dancer and choreographer who started her dance training in Hip-hop and Latin dance forms. In 2008, she moved to London to train in Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban where she was a member of Transitions Dance Company as a part of MA degree and received The Sylvia Bolmer Memorial Fund Award Prize for her choreological research into hip-hop. Since graduating, she has worked with Art of Spectra (SE), Cathy Waller, Christopher Marney, James Cousins, Jose Agudo, Mickael Marso Riviere, Rosie Kay, Vincent Mantsoe, Tamsin Fitzgerald and more.  She can be also seen in Coldplay and DJ Fresh music videos and So You Think You Can Dance. She has been working for Impact Dance Company on LIVEVIBE events in London and Caracas as a rehearsal director. Recently, she co-choreographed Sound Moovz launch show directed by Hakeem Onibudo and co-choreographer Anthony Duncan. She is looking forward to coming back to LIVEVIBE as a choreographer.

About the piece

I will be making a duet piece. The piece explores the idea of the original song transforming and layering into another song in a different era, then reimagining to sample this song through dance now. I am very excited about this concept of Samples and Interpolations as I grew up with Hip-hop music yet there are a lot of samples that I don't know. It will be a very interesting opportunity to look deeper into Hip-hop sampling culture through a contemporary approach.
