Shift Dance Company

What is Shift?

Shift is The Place's senior youth dance company, for young people aged 14-19 years.

Shift is a chance for creative young people to work individually and together as a company to challenge themselves as young dancers and choreographers.

Shift offers a high quality dance experience for young people to make, create and perform whilst maintaining an equal focus on the company’s ethos to provide a friendly, safe and supportive environment where every dancer is free to express themselves and grow in their creative and technical abilities.

The company has evolved extensively since it’s creation in 2001. Company dancers can expect to perform at least six times a year at venues such as Twickenham Stadium, the O2, Royal Opera House and of course The Place's theatre. Over the last years, Shift has worked with various choreographers including Seke Chimutengwende, James Finnemore, Maresa von Stockert, Martin Lawrance, Tom Dale, Zoi Dimitriou, Darren Ellis, Theo Clinkard, Kerry Nichols, Sade and Kristina Alleyne and Rick Nodine.

How can I join?

•    Shift members are accepted by audition only

Please note that you do not need to prepare anything for the audition but you must let us know of any special requirements so we can support you. Please also be aware we will only hold one audition day so if you are unable to make that we cannot arrange another audition day or accept footage of you dancing. We endeavour to make sure that the audition day is a fun, playful and positive experience for everyone.

Who can join Shift?

Anyone aged 14-19 years old can apply to join Shift. Some dance experience is desirable but not essential. We are looking for interesting young artists who show creative potential and who are willing to work as part of a team.

What can I expect?

Shift members need to be ready to commit to the whole academic year. Dancers meet every Thursday during term-time from 5.30-8pm with Lucy Evans, Shift’s rehearsal director.

During the first term, dancers will work closely with a choreographer and their rehearsal director to create a new work, which they will then perform at theatres and platforms throughout the year. Over the next two terms alongside performance opportunities, company dancers can explore their own choreographic style and develop their technical skills with projects such as Divided, which allows Shift to collaborate with designers from Wimbledon College of Art to create an evening of dance installations.

Is there a fee?

The current annual fee for 2017-18 is £350. The fee can be paid in instalments throughout the year, it just needs to be agreed with our team.
