Shift is a chance for creative young people to work individually and together as a company to challenge themselves as young dancers and choreographers.
Shift offers a high quality dance experience for young people to make, create and perform whilst maintaining an equal focus on the company’s ethos to provide a friendly, safe and supportive environment where every dancer is free to express themselves and grow in their creative and technical abilities.
The company has evolved extensively since it’s creation in 2001. Company dancers can expect to perform at least six times a year at venues such as Twickenham Stadium, the O2, Royal Opera House and of course The Place's theatre. Over the last years, Shift has worked with various choreographers including Seke Chimutengwende, James Finnemore, Maresa von Stockert, Martin Lawrance, Tom Dale, Zoi Dimitriou, Darren Ellis, Theo Clinkard, Kerry Nichols, Sade and Kristina Alleyne and Rick Nodine.
Shift (for young dancers aged 14-19) meet every Thursday of term time from 5.30pm-8.00pm, alongside intensive rehearsal days throughout the year. The company is led by rehearsal director Lucy Evans, who supports the group in working with external artists and choreographers, throughout their own choreographic project and in rehearsing work ready for performances. Shift can expect to have on average 6 performance opportunities throughout the academic year, although this varies depending on the platforms that are available for us to apply to.
Entry to Shift is via audition only. Shift auditions take place in September each year, with a chance to meet the rehearsal director as well as current members of Shift. Please check our audition page here for more information.
Shift requires a year-long commitment from September through to July: regular attendance is important to ensure smooth creation and rehearsal processes. The full cost of Shift is £390, which covers the cost of a company hoodie, session fees throughout the year as well as all performance opportunities. Commitment to paying the full fee is necessary: we do not offer refunds unless for medical reasons (and on receipt of a medical note).
