Designed for complete beginners, this course serves as an ideal starting point to take your first steps in dance.
Students are guided through the key principles of contemporary dance in energetic and stimulating sessions, which encourage and challenge the participant in a fun and holistic manner. These sessions provide participants with a great overview of contemporary dance. Attention will be paid not only to core strength, alignment and technique but also creativity, quality and physicality. The course will introduce and develop the foundations of floor work, centre practice, travelling, improvisation, contact work and choreography; and will a give the student a sound knowledge of the basic technique, movement vocabulary, coordination and confidence needed to prepare them to progress on to Improvers or Level 1.
This course is enrolment only and not available for drop in. The course runs for 11 weeks from 23 Sep – 8 Dec 2017. The enrolment cost of £110 (£95 Concessions) covers all 11 classes.
Gerrard Martin trained at De Montfort University and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. He has performed with Rosie Kay Dance Company, and has toured nationally with Tavaziva Dance, Union Dance Company, Ballet Black, Aletta Collins Dance Company, State of Emergency, and Phoenix Dance Company as well as has danced in the West End Lion King production.
Aside from modelling, commercial dance contracts and film engagements, Gerrard has also danced for show The Snowman, at the National Theatre, has toured internationally with the English National Opera, and has performed at the Royal Opera House.
Gerrard has choreographed for the British Museum, Pegasus Opera and the National Portrait gallery. He created his project-based company Gerrard Martin Dance in 2011. Currently Gerrard is teaching and mentoring on the Children and Youth Dance programme at The Place.
Gerrard aims to produce works of emotive and socially relevant dance-theatre; to teach and facilitate creativity through movement, yoga and dance, collaborate and engage with artists across different mediums.
