Class description

These classes are designed to expand your knowledge and performance skills. You will work further on technique and learning the dynamics of movement phrasing. These classes are also suitable for participants with experience who are returning to dance.

Jo teaches a Limón and Release based class that explores transfer of weight, succession, suspension, rebound, fall and recovery with an emphasis on the use of breath. The class often includes lengthy movement phrases that build in complexity. Attention is given to the use of dynamic rhythm and efficiency of movement.

Artist’s biography

Jo graduated from Middlesex University in 2002 and has worked extensively as an independent dance artist. Jo’s interests lie in creativity, choreography, teaching and learning, health and collaborative work. As artist in residence at The Brindley (2004-2007), Jo received Arts Council funding to research, develop and tour her own choreographic work and education programmes, one of which was screened nationally and internationally.

During that time she also undertook additional training in Cunningham and Limón at Cunningham Studios and at Peridance in New York. Her commissioned choreography with youth dance companies has been performed at venues across the UK. Jo has been guest and associate lecturer in Higher Education settings and has facilitated and devised professional development courses for both specialist and non-specialist practitioners, including at the Royal Ballet School for Young Creatives. She has authored national publications and spoken at multi-sector conferences about dance as a vehicle for learning. Currently Jo teaches at The Place, for Siobhan Davies Dance (primary programme), and is an Animateur for Essential Alston.

Jo is supported by Arts Council England and the Dance Enterprise Ideas Fund in directing a dance and film project (co-produced by East London Dance), that puts young people at the heart of healthy messages.
