Professional Class

All professional classes at The Place are intended for high-level dancers only. These classes offer professional dancers an opportunity to maintain their skills and abilities, network with other professionals and even maybe find new projects to work on.

If you are an amateur dancer, there are lots of other opportunities for you to engage with. Browse our adult classes programme for more information.

These classes require professional standards from participants and early arrival is required for warm up.

About The Class

Jose’s technique class is fast paced and aims to improve stamina through precise and simple movement patterns. The principles of the class are influenced by a diversity of traditional forms such as Flamenco, Kathak and martial arts, which are brought into a contemporary dance context. The initial warm up is followed by more complex movement material with a dynamic focus on the concept of ‘attack and release’. The technique allows joints to relax and energy to flow with maximum efficiency. Jose often uses counts to influence the dynamic of the movement and spinning to engage the core.

About Jose Agudo

Jose started his career in Andalusia where he began performing as a Flamenco dancer. Slowly the world of contemporary dance became more visible as he worked throughout Europe performing with Charleroi/Danses, Ballet de Marseille, T.R.A.S.H, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and Akram Khan Company.

As a rehearsal director and assistant choreographer Jose has worked on several creations for Akram Khan Company, including DESH, iTMOi, TOROBAKA, Until the Lions, Chotto Desh, London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, and Sylvie Guillem’s farewell tour Life in Progress.

In 2011, Jose started to study Kathak under Akram’s guidance. Finding many parallels between this training and his early studies of Flamenco, Jose reconnected with his roots and began to explore traditional forms in a contemporary context. As a result he created three works: Paradiso focused on Indian dance; Silk Road with Bharatanatyam artist Mavin Khoo; and Carmen with its strong influences from the Mediterranean and Flamenco.

Jose’s independent choreographic commissions also include, Ki for Phoenix Dance Theatre and English National Ballet School; Selah and Carmen for ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble; A Thousand Shepherds for ACE Dance and Music, later restaged with Cape Dance Company; Arctic for LCDS; and Regnum for Festival International de Music y Danza de Granada, amongst several other creations.

During 2018 Jose will create commissions for Area Jeune Ballet (Switzerland) and Norrdans (Sweden), premiere his first short film Selah with co-director Matthew Beckett, and perform in the UK and international tour of Silk Road.

Q&A With Jose Agudo

  • Tell us a little bit about your background in dance?
I started to dance Flamenco in my home city of Granada and eventually discovered and trained in contemporary dance, ballet and Kathak. Rhythm is at the heart of my practice due to that first contact with Flamenco.

  • What can we expect from your class?
I think my classes are challenging in intensity and detail however people seem to have a lot of fun playing with the movement material.

  • What do you like most about teaching?
I train alone most days so teaching is a way to share ideas and movement. I love the energy of dancing in a group and being able to go a little further than I can alone.

  • Who was your most influential teacher?
There have been so many however in the early days I would say the Spanish choreographer and teacher Ramon Oller , and over the last few years Akram Khan.

  • What has been your biggest challenge as a dancer?
To create and perform my latest production Silk Road.

  • Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Frida Kahlo as my daughter would be very happy to meet her.
