All professional classes at The Place are intended for high-level dancers only. These classes offer professional dancers an opportunity to maintain their skills and abilities, network with other professionals and even maybe find new projects to work on.
If you are an amateur dancer, there are lots of other opportunities for you to engage with. Browse our adult classes programme for more information.
These classes require professional standards from participants and early arrival is required for warm up.
Together we will spiral in and out of the earth, pass through expansion and cohesion, run, slide, learn how to challenge gravity, how to fall, how to rise, and how to command your body. We will work with efficient pathways to move with speed without forgetting any part of our body. We will command our body with our voice. We will pass through the space with unlimited possibilities in curve transforming the environment of dance. We will be soft, wild and powerfully spontaneous.
The class will be a combination of principles from Flying Low originally created by David Zambrano and Leila’s further development.
Since receiving a place on David Zambrano’s 50 Days Flying Low and Passing Through (2010), Leila is now one of the few internationally certified artists teaching this technique, and has led the development of this approach in the UK.
She is guest Lecturer at London Contemporary Dance School and has taught throughout studios and Universities in Europe, Middle East, Asia, United States and South America.
Leila creates work that is high-energy yet nuanced and abstract in its choreography. She draws on personal experiences focusing on themes of identity, gender and the cultural interface. Her work is global, socio-culturally relative and through movement seeks to speak to our very soul of who we are and where we come from.
As a performer she has worked with Layla Rosa, Wendy Houston, Lea Anderson, David Zambrano, Crystal Pite and Thomas Lehmen. Her work has been presented throughout the UK at Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler’s Wells; Greenwich Dance, Dance4, Stratford Circus and the Place.
She was Artist in Residence at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (2017) creating a new work 3 fingers at arms Length, nominated for ‘Outstanding Choreography’ Hong Kong Dance Alliance Awards, and dance film HOOD.
