Youth Dance Companies: Shuffle & Shift

The Place is proud to be the home of our two youth dance companies: Shift and Shuffle.

Providing access to high-quality training, various performance opportunities throughout the year and the chance to deepen creative and technical dance skills, Shift and Shuffle continue to be the epitome of The Place’s mission: to power imagination through dance.

Shuffle (for young dancers aged 9-14):

  • Shuffle usually meet every Saturday of term time from 1-2.45pm.
  • The company is led by artistic director Ihsaan De Banya, who works collaboratively with the group to create new dance pieces that are performed throughout the year.
  • Shuffle can expect to have on average one dance performance opportunity per term, although this varies depending on the platforms that are available for us to apply to.
  • The first term this year will be split between studio and at-home working.
  • The annual fee for Shuffle this year (2020/21) is £320.

Shift (for young dancers aged 14-19):

  • Shift usually meet every Thursday of term time from 5.30pm-8.00pm, alongside intensive rehearsal days throughout the year.
  • The company is led by rehearsal director Lucy Evans, who supports the group throughout their own choreographic project, in working with external artists and choreographers, and in rehearsing work ready for performances.
  • Shift can expect to have on average 6 performance opportunities throughout the academic year, although this varies depending on the platforms that are available for us to apply to.
  • The first term this year will be split between studio and at-home working.
  • The annual fee for Shift this year (2020/21) is £345.

Please note:

  • Both youth companies require a year-long commitment from September through to July: regular attendance is important to ensure smooth creation and rehearsal processes.
  • Please note that due to the current circumstances, Shift and Shuffle will be working both online and in smaller groups in the studio for the time being.
  • Entry to both companies is subject to audition, which will take place over Zoom this year.
